Every person carries a story. Some stories are celebrated. Others remain unheard. But behind every struggle, every setback and every achievement is a story worth listening to.
Derc Powel Okunyo is a Kenyan media enthusiast, multimedia journalist, storyteller and digital media strategist who serves as a Director at Misheveve.com and Head of Media and Communications, where he leads the platform’s media, storytelling and communications vision.
His passion is simple: to find the human story behind the achievement.
His journey in media began behind the microphone at 103.9 MU FM and later took him into the newsroom and field as a multimedia journalist at Citizen TV Kenya, where he covered business, technology, politics, current affairs and community stories.
Over the years, Derc has developed a distinctive approach to storytelling rooted in curiosity, empathy and, above all, listening.
He is drawn to stories of resilience, ambition, innovation and transformation—the stories of people who have faced difficult circumstances, experienced loss or failure, taken unconventional paths, and still found the courage to move forward.
For Derc, journalism has never been simply about reporting what happened.
It is about understanding the person behind what happened.
What did they go through?
What did they lose?
What kept them going?
What did they learn?
And what made them believe they could try again?
Derc believes that success rarely tells the whole story.
Behind a thriving business may be years of uncertainty. Behind an achievement may be a painful failure. Behind a new beginning may be the loss of something once considered certain.
That is where his storytelling begins.
Through journalism, interviews, podcasts, documentaries and digital storytelling, Derc explores the journey behind people’s achievements—the setbacks, sacrifices, disappointments, turning points and lessons that often remain invisible when only the final success is told.
His work is driven by a simple belief:
People should not only be known for where they ended up. Their journey deserves to be remembered too.
Derc is the founder of Inawezekana.org, a storytelling and advocacy platform built around one powerful idea:
“Inawezekana” means “It is possible.”
The platform exists to give visibility to people whose circumstances may have made their future seem impossible—people dealing with addiction, loss, failure, career setbacks, difficult beginnings and other life-changing challenges.
Inawezekana is about what happens after the difficult moment.
Through interviews, podcasts, documentaries, written features and conversations, the platform creates space for people to share where they came from, what they experienced, what challenged them, what they learned and how they found a way forward.
It is a platform about possibility, resilience, recovery, reinvention and human potential.
Because sometimes, what someone needs most is not another story about someone who had everything.
They need to hear from someone who struggled, fell, lost something, started again—and discovered that life could still become something different.
Derc is also the Founder and CEO of Derc Powel Studio, a creative media and communications company providing services across marketing, videography, advertising, digital content development, brand storytelling and strategic communications.
Through the studio, Derc works with businesses, organisations and individuals to develop compelling visual and digital narratives that communicate their ideas, strengthen their visibility and connect them with their audiences.
This experience has allowed him to understand storytelling from both sides—the journalist searching for the story and the organisation seeking to tell its own.
At Misheveve.com, Derc brings together his journalism, media, communications and storytelling experience to help build a stronger human connection between agriculture and the wider public.
As a Director of Misheveve.com and Head of Media and Communications, he oversees the vision and development of Misheveve Media—the storytelling arm of the platform dedicated to documenting the people behind agriculture.
Misheveve Media will tell the stories of farmers, agricultural entrepreneurs, agribusinesses and innovators across Kenya and Africa.
The focus goes beyond what people produce.
It is about who they are, how they started, what they have experienced, what they have learned, what they are building and where they hope to go next.
The stories may explore:
Derc’s role is to ensure that agriculture is not presented merely as numbers, crops, livestock and markets—but as a human story.
Because behind every harvest is a person.
Behind every farm is a decision.
Behind every business is a risk.
Behind every success is a journey.
Derc’s work across journalism, Inawezekana, Derc Powel Studio and Misheveve is connected by one belief:
Everyone has a story. And every story has the potential to make someone else believe that something is possible.
At Misheveve, he hopes to bring that philosophy to agriculture—to discover the farmers whose stories have never been told, document the journeys behind their businesses and give them a platform to be seen, heard and remembered.
For Derc, storytelling is more than reporting what happened.
It is listening deeply, finding meaning and giving people the visibility their stories deserve.
